Iversen, Iver
Born in Slesvig, Denmark, in 1869, Iver Iversen emigrated to the United States in 1886 to avoid military oppression, initially working on farms in Henry County, Illinois. He relocated to Fresno County in 1887, joining his brother Andrew and gaining early experience in grain farming and viticulture within the Scandinavian Colony and West Park districts. Over the following decades, Iversen became a premier viticulturist and successful real estate investor, buying, leveling, and developing raw tracts into model vineyards across Fresno and Madera counties, including substantial acreage dedicated to Muscat, Thompson, and Emperor grapes.
In the Madison district, Iversen married Elisebeth Beck, a native of Slesvig, with whom he had four children: Sophia, Edna, Leland, and Evelyn. Deeply committed to civic and community development, Iversen served for years as a trustee of the Madison school district, held leadership roles as ex-president of both Dania and the Danish Brotherhood, and actively supported the California Peach Growers, Inc., and the California Associated Raisin Company. During World War I, he and his wife were energetic participants in local Red Cross and war relief drives, earning wide recognition as influential and patriotic leaders within Fresno’s Danish-American community.
