Irwin, Frank L.
Born in Springfield, Illinois, in 1876, Frank L. Irwin learned the bricklaying trade as a young man before moving west to California. After spending a year in Berkeley, he relocated to Fresno in January 1907 to establish himself as a prominent contractor and builder. Over the following years, Irwin supervised the masonry and construction of several landmark local educational structures, including the Fresno High School, the Lincoln and Lowell school annexes, the Emerson School, and the Fresno State Normal School.
In 1898, Irwin married Ethel C. Crowder, with whom he had three children: Edna, Lyle, and Charles. Elected as a Fresno City Trustee in 1913, Irwin was deeply active in local governance and organized labor, serving as president of both the Fresno Labor Council and the Fresno Building Trades Council. A Republican, Methodist, and active member of the Odd Fellows and Woodmen of the World, Irwin earned widespread respect for his contributions to the civic, educational, and industrial growth of Fresno.
