Huss, C. Irvin
Born in Genoa, Ohio, in 1876, C. Irvin Huss was raised on his family’s farm in Lucas County and educated in local schools. After early efforts clearing timber and farming, he entered the oil industry in Ohio, working as a contractor, pumper, and tool dresser. In 1908, he moved to Coalinga, California, where he quickly established himself in regional oil operations, initially drilling in Devil’s Den before accepting a long-term position with the Standard Oil Company on Section 28 in 1911, advancing to full driller two years later.
Huss married Mamie Seeger in Toledo in 1899, with whom he had three children: Elinor, Basil, and George. A fraternal member of the Knights of the Maccabees, he earned a wide reputation across the Coalinga oil fields as an expert, reliable, and highly experienced driller.
