Hurley, Timothy
Born in County Cork, Ireland, in 1865, Timothy “Tim” Hurley emigrated to the United States in 1883 at eighteen years old, settling in the then-small town of Fresno. He initially worked for pioneer developer B. L. Jamison, assisting in the construction of the Church Ditch canal system and working on ranches in Fowler for eight years. Moving to the Jamison region around 1891, Hurley formed a partnership with W. J. Anthony and Thomas Mullins to lease and farm 1,500 acres from Jeff James, utilizing large team teams and combined harvesters for large-scale wheat and barley production.
Following the dissolution of his grain-farming partnership in 1908, Hurley acquired a forty-acre tract in Tranquillity, leveling and developing it into productive alfalfa fields while continuing to raise leased grain. The youngest surviving member of his immediate family—which included fellow Fresno pioneer brothers Jeremiah and Cornelius—Hurley earned wide respect as an industrious and enduring agricultural figure in western Fresno County.
