Hurley, Jeremiah
Born in County Cork, Ireland, in 1848, Jeremiah Hurley emigrated to the United States in 1873, working in Massachusetts and Connecticut before moving to California in 1875. Settling in Fresno County in 1877, he established a early dairy operation in the Central California Colony, where he pioneered local butter manufacturing and invented an innovative barrel churn design. He later expanded into large-scale livestock and grain production, accumulating a 1,000-acre ranch in Auberry Valley on Little Dry Creek while maintaining a 40-acre home ranch in Perrin Colony No. 2.
In 1884, Hurley married Kate Sweeney, with whom he had ten children, including five sons who served in the United States military during World War I—one of whom, Timothy Sarsfield, died in service in 1918. Beyond his agricultural pursuits, Hurley served for many years as a local school trustee and deputy sheriff, earning wide respect as a civic leader and pioneer dairyman in Central California.
