Hunt, Ben
Born in Westfield, Indiana, in 1852 to a Quaker family, Ben Hunt learned the machinist trade in Richmond before moving west to Spokane, San Francisco, and ultimately Fresno in 1890. In 1900, Hunt established a mechanical workshop that was incorporated two years later as the Valley Foundry & Machine Works, where he served as president and oversaw its expansion into a major industrial enterprise. Under his leadership, the firm specialized in the manufacture of gas engines, patented centrifugal pumps, and general machine contracts for agricultural clients throughout the San Joaquin Valley.
Married to Grace Parry of Richmond, Indiana, Hunt raised four children who actively assisted in the management and operation of the family manufacturing business. Recognized as a model employer and a pioneer industrialist, he invested heavily in local infrastructure and supported numerous projects designed to accelerate the economic growth of Fresno. Today, his career stands as a testament to early California industrial development, civic dedication, and technical innovation during the turn of the twentieth century.
