Hoyer, N. L.
Born on the Island of Fyen, Denmark, in 1859, N. L. Hoyer served in the Danish Navy before immigrating to Fresno, California, in 1884. He initially worked in Central Colony vineyards to master horticulture and viticulture before moving to the West Side near Huron in 1887. There, he successfully filed preemption and homestead claims, later realizing substantial profits by selling portion of his Coalinga-area holdings during the regional oil boom while retaining key real estate at Huron.
Hoyer eventually established a model forty-acre ranch at Rolinda on White’s Bridge Road, developing it into a thriving property dedicated to alfalfa, dairying, and vineyards of Sultana, Malaga, and wine grapes. Following a return trip to Denmark, he married Maren Nielsen in 1907, with whom he raised three children: Dagmar, Walter, and Chester. A prominent figure in the local Danish community, Hoyer served as past president of the Danish Brotherhood, a longtime director of the Danish Creamery Association, and an active stockholder in major regional agricultural cooperatives, including the California Associated Raisin Company and the California Peach Growers, Inc.
