Hoxie, John C.
Born in Sandwich, Massachusetts, in 1848, John C. Hoxie migrated to California via the Isthmus of Panama in 1858, settling in Millerton. Educated privately by his mother, who also managed the local post office, Hoxie entered the stock business at age fifteen and gradually acquired thousands of acres for cattle and sheep ranching. In 1874, he relocated to Fresno, where he built prominent residences and established himself as an influential early resident.
Beginning in the early 1880s, Hoxie expanded into extensive mining ventures across Central California, co-owning and superintending the notable Mud Spring Mine. His recognized expertise led to his selection by directors of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition to curate the Central California mineral display, a comprehensive project that earned widespread acclaim. Married in 1873 to Mary J. McKenzie—Fresno City’s first schoolteacher—Hoxie remained active in civic affairs and Democratic politics until his death in November 1918, leaving a lasting mark as a pioneer rancher, miner, and civic contributor.
