Houser, Mrs. Lucinda
Born in Darke County, Ohio, in 1843, Lucinda (Hole) Houser was raised on a farm and educated in local public schools. In 1864, she married John N. Houser, a Civil War veteran of the Fifty-sixth Ohio Infantry, and the couple farmed in Iowa before traveling west to California and Oregon. Returning to California in 1877, they became pioneering settlers of Watts Valley in Fresno County, where they established a squatter’s claim, constructed a log cabin, and eventually secured title to a 520-acre homestead adjoining the National Forest Reserve.
Following the death of her husband in January 1900, Mrs. Houser continued to reside on the family homestead, with the extensive ranch and cattle operations managed by her sons, Louis J. and James A. Houser. Mother to eight children, she maintained strong ties to her community as a devout member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and earned wide esteem as one of the oldest and most respected pioneer settlers in the Watts Valley region of Fresno County.
