Houghton, Emmons William
Born in Anson, Maine, in 1862, Emmons William Houghton worked as an expert potato grower in Aroostook County, Maine, before relocating to California in 1904. After operating a mercantile business in Soquel, Santa Cruz County, he moved to Fresno County in 1907 and purchased a forty-five-acre ranch in the Roosevelt district. Houghton developed the property into a flourishing dairy operation, installing advanced pumping and irrigation systems connected to the Herndon Canal to cultivate rich alfalfa fields.
At Soquel, Houghton married Mrs. Estella (Peck) Barber, whose son, L. N. Barber, became a prominent attorney in Fresno; Houghton also had a son, Thomas, from a previous marriage. In addition to his agricultural pursuits, Houghton actively supported community welfare, serving a term as a school trustee in the Roosevelt district and maintaining memberships with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Congregational Church. Through his progressive farming practices and civic involvement, Houghton earned widespread respect as a leading dairyman and valued pioneer resident of Fresno County.
