Hospool, George Edward
Born near La Grande, Oregon, in 1872, George Edward Hospool was raised in the butcher trade by his father—a notable pioneer founder of Grand Ronde Valley—and educated in Washington. As a young man, Hospool gained extensive practical experience riding the range in Oregon and running a meat market in Boise, Idaho. In 1900, he relocated to Fresno, California, where he managed a cattle ranch for six years, established the local Union Market, and operated a dairy ranch and wholesale ice enterprise.
In October 1916, Hospool was appointed by the Board of Supervisors as superintendent of the Fresno County Farms, taking charge of a 200-acre agricultural property and a high-grade Holstein dairy herd. Married to Gertrude Davidson in Nevada, with whom he had one daughter, Edna, Hospool applied his extensive background in livestock and ranch management to efficiently serve the public. Through his technical knowledge, industrious management, and civic dedication, he earned widespread respect as a leading stockman and public administrator in Fresno County.
