Horn, George Wampole
Born in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, in 1851, George Wampole Horn was raised in Illinois, Iowa, and Kansas, where he gained early agricultural experience in livestock feeding and management. Moving to California in 1877, he initially worked near Tollhouse before taking up a homestead in the Eschol district of Fresno County. Despite experiencing setbacks in hydraulic mining operations on Dry Creek, Horn persevered to build an eighty-acre ranch dedicated to grain, livestock, and mixed horticulture, including Muscat and Thompson Seedless grapes as well as peaches.
Horn married Ella M. Hoffman, whose father was instrumental in founding the Eschol school district. Continuing her family’s civic legacy, Mrs. Horn served as a school trustee from 1912 onward and actively supported the pivotal consolidation of the Eschol and Kingsburg school districts. Raising eight children on their ranch, the Horns remained prominent figures in local agricultural and educational progress, earning respect throughout Fresno County for their industriousness and public spirit.
