Hoop, J. R., D.V.S.
Born in Kansas in 1888, J. R. Hoop spent his early life on livestock ranches and worked as a jockey before completing his formal education at the Kansas City Veterinary College in 1910. He established a highly successful veterinary dentistry and surgery practice in Selma, California, utilizing modern equipment and advanced vaccines to treat livestock diseases. During World War I, Dr. Hoop paused his professional practice to serve as a commissioned lieutenant in the Veterinary Corps at Camp Lee, Virginia, receiving an honorable discharge in January 1919.
Following his military service, Dr. Hoop relocated his family to Fresno and shifted his primary focus toward agricultural management, overseeing two vineyard properties totaling sixty acres near Selma. Married to Mary A. Wagner in 1913, with whom he had one son, J. D., he maintained active involvement in civic life through membership in the Free and Accepted Masons and the Foresters. Through his specialized professional contributions, military service, and vineyard developments, Dr. Hoop established himself as a prominent veterinary authority and progressive agriculturalist in Fresno County.
