Holstein, Nicholas
Born in Saratov, Russia, in 1878, Nicholas Holstein gained extensive commercial experience managing mercantile stores and regional operations for the Singer Sewing Machine Company. After immigrating to Fresno in 1913, he worked in a packing house and attended night school to master English before returning to sewing machine sales across Fresno County. While working as a sales agent, he partnered with his wife, Alexandrina, to establish a small, independent dry goods shop that quickly outgrew its original space.
As the retail business expanded, Holstein resigned his sales position to devote his full attention to operating and enlarging the commercial enterprise. He eventually acquired property at 117 F Street, transforming the store into a leading neighborhood destination for general merchandise, notions, and groceries. Raised alongside four children—Waldemar, Ludmilia, Egenia, and Victor—Holstein established a lasting family legacy and earned wide respect as an energetic Fresno merchant.
