Holmgren, Frank G.
Born in Sweden in 1860, Frank G. Holmgren learned the carpenter’s trade as a youth before immigrating to the United States in 1880. After spending seven years in Brockton, Massachusetts—where he worked on the W. L. Douglas shoe factory—he relocated to California in 1887 and established himself in Fresno in 1889. As a skilled craftsman, Holmgren helped construct several of early Fresno’s prominent landmarks, including the Temple Bar Block, the Farmers’ National Bank Block, the People’s Loan and Savings Bank Building, and the Barton Opera House.
Holmgren later turned to contracting, erecting the local Swedish Lutheran Church before conducting furniture and cigar enterprises on J Street. In 1909, he expanded into agriculture by developing a raw twenty-acre plot on Belmont Avenue into a flourishing muscat grape vineyard, which he improved with a custom residence and sold at a substantial profit in 1913. Married to Louisa Larson in 1889, with whom he raised a daughter, Ida, Holmgren maintained lifelong ties to the Carpenters’ Union and the Swedish Lutheran Church while continuing to contribute to Fresno’s building and civic growth.
