Holm, John
Holm, John
Born in Finland in 1858, John Holm taught himself to read and write four languages while training as a skilled ship joiner. After spending seven years at sea visiting major global ports, he left maritime life in San Francisco in 1886 to work in Eureka’s timber and shipbuilding industries. In 1903, Holm became one of the earliest settlers in Vinland, California, where he acquired sixty acres and developed a highly successful agricultural property focused on Thompson Seedless grapes.
Holm married Sophia Johansen in Finland, and together they raised four surviving children, including a son who served honorably overseas in World War I. A progressive farmer, Holm actively supported regional cooperative enterprises as a member of both the California Peach Growers, Inc. and the California Associated Raisin Company. Through his devotion to the Lutheran Church and his model ranching practices, he established his farm as a celebrated local showplace for Fresno County agriculture.
