Hole, Mrs. Elizabeth
Born in Ohio in 1841 and orphaned at an early age, Elizabeth (Tilton) Hole married John Hole in 1861 and engaged in farming across Ohio and Iowa before moving west. The couple arrived in Watts Valley, Fresno County, in 1877, settling on a 160-acre squatter’s claim with only five dollars to their name. Through years of persistent labor, they built a log cabin, cleared the land, and eventually expanded their holdings into a thriving stock and grain ranch irrigated by Watts Creek.
Following her husband’s death in 1915, Mrs. Hole remained on the homestead while her son, Theo, took over management of the family ranch. Together, the couple raised eight children and played an influential role in early local development, including the founding of the Sycamore school district. As one of the earliest surviving pioneers of Watts Valley, Mrs. Hole gained widespread esteem throughout the community for her deep knowledge of regional history and her resilience in developing the local frontier.
