Hogue, Samuel L.
Hogue, Samuel L.
Born in Illinois in 1857, Samuel L. Hogue arrived in California in 1872 to join his father, initially working at Pine Ridge before qualifying as a teacher at the San Jose Normal School. After teaching in Fresno County for five years and serving as principal of the Selma school, he entered the real estate business and held public office as justice of the peace in both Selma and Fresno. He subsequently spent fourteen years as chief deputy in the Fresno County auditor’s office while also developing a 46-acre apple orchard in North Fork, Madera County.
A lifelong Republican, Hogue served as internal revenue collector for eight San Joaquin Valley counties from 1900 to 1904, sat on the Fresno Board of Education, and frequently represented his party at county and state conventions. Married to Effie H. Brown in 1881, he raised four children—Lassen, James, Hazel, and Lucille—all of whom graduated from Fresno High School. Hogue was active in the Presbyterian Church, the Free and Accepted Masons, and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, earning a reputation as a dedicated administrator and civic leader in Fresno County.
