Hilton, A. R.
Born in Nova Scotia in 1852 into a family of English leather manufacturers, A. R. Hilton came to California in 1868 and learned the blacksmithing trade in Alameda County. After operating shops across various mining and railroad towns—including Kernville, Bodie, and Pittsburg—he married Alice Rebecca Whitney, the daughter of a prominent California contractor, in 1877. Moving to Fresno in 1888, Hilton built a shop on N Street where he established a successful manufacturing business, earning widespread acclaim for creating the heavy-duty “Hilton Wagon” used extensively for regional freighting until his retirement in 1904.
Alongside her husband’s blacksmithing enterprise, Alice Whitney Hilton brought a rich family heritage to Fresno as the daughter of early pioneer parents from Maine. The couple raised two surviving children, Mary Sophia and Leslie Allen, and became long-standing figures in the civic and religious life of Fresno while residing on N Street. An Odd Fellow and lifelong Republican, A. R. Hilton, together with his wife, contributed significantly to the early industrial growth and community development of Fresno County.
