Herman, Bonie Benjamin
Born in Fresno City in 1880, Bonie Benjamin Herman was a second-generation stockman who began riding after cattle during his youth. In 1893, at the age of thirteen, he entered the employ of Jeff James at San Joaquin, where he eventually rose to become foreman of the stock department. Following the property’s transition to the San Joaquin Farms Land Company, Herman retained his supervisory position, overseeing around 5,000 head of cattle and a herd of horses across 35,000 acres.
Beyond his long-standing career on the San Joaquin ranch, Herman raised four children—Florence, Lottie, Maggie, and Ralph—with his wife, Carrie Morano. He was also an active member of the local community as a fraternal brother in Fresno Lodge No. 186, I.O.O.F. Through decades of uninterrupted service on the range, Herman earned a respected reputation as one of Fresno County’s most experienced livestock foremen.
