Heinzer, Felix
Born in Canton Schwyz, Switzerland, in 1876, Felix Heinzer was raised on an Alpine farm where he mastered traditional Swiss dairying and cheesemaking. After serving as a non-commissioned officer in the Swiss army, he immigrated to California in 1903. Over the next eight years, he gained extensive industry experience across various California counties before arriving in Fresno in 1911. Following stints managing dairies in Coalinga, Fresno, Riverdale, and Burrel, he eventually settled in the Barstow Colony.
In 1919, Heinzer exercised a lease option to purchase his eighty-acre ranch in Barstow Colony, establishing a high-grade dairy operation milking roughly twenty-five Holstein cows and making plans to expand into Thompson Seedless viticulture. A key figure in regional agricultural organizations, he served as a director for the Cooperative Dairymen’s Association, became an active member of the San Joaquin Valley Milk Producers Association, and supported the California Peach Growers, Inc. Heinzer was also affiliated with the Fraternal Brotherhood, St. Alphonzo’s Catholic Church in Fresno, and the Republican party.
