Hatch, Mrs. Mary J.
Born in Maine, Mary J. (Hartford) Hatch married New Hampshire native Dennis Hatch in 1873 before migrating to California in 1876. After initially farming in Merced County, the couple relocated to Fresno County in September 1881, homesteading 160 acres in the Elkhorn school district. Dennis Hatch actively supported local growth, even donating two acres of land for the district’s first schoolhouse, and successfully engaged in stock-raising on the property until his death in May 1900.
Recognized as the oldest living pioneer of the Elkhorn school district, Mrs. Hatch remained on the original homestead, where she was widely beloved for her enduring hospitality. The couple had two daughters, Mabel E., who died in infancy, and Alice M., who married S. E. Williamson and resided on the family ranch with her six children. Spanning nearly four decades on her original land grant, Mrs. Hatch maintained a well-respected position as one of the area’s earliest foundational figures.
