Hartwick, August
Born in Straub, Samara, Russia, in 1876, August Hartwick worked on local ranches until immigrating to Fresno in 1902 alongside his wife, Kathrina Wegele. He initially worked on ranches and for the Southern Pacific Railway before purchasing twenty acres of raw land in the Biola district in 1905, which he transformed into a productive ranch with Thompson Seedless vineyards, orchards, and alfalfa fields.
Hartwick later expanded his agricultural operations by acquiring an additional ten-acre tract, where he established a small dairy alongside further vineyard and alfalfa plantings. Together with his wife, he raised eight children: Mollie, Henry, Floyd, Esther, Ezra, Helen, Marie, and Alvina. Highly respected within his community, Hartwick was an active member of the California Associated Raisin Company and a devoted supporter of the Seventh Day Adventist Church at Barstow.
