Hartigan, Lester F.
Born in Oleander, Fresno County, in 1887, Lester F. Hartigan was the son of James and Margaret (Douglas) Hartigan. After completing his education in Fresno and taking specialized training at Heald’s Electrical and Engineering College in San Francisco, he honed his trade at the Central California Machine Shop and managed the seeding department for the J. B. Inderrieden Packing Company.
In 1914, Hartigan joined the California Associated Raisin Company as a machinist, quickly advancing after just one year to become the superintendent of all machinery across the company’s extensive plants. Inheriting an inventive talent from his maternal grandfather, Frank A. Douglas—who invented the first raisin-stemming machine—Hartigan created key mechanical innovations, including steel paddles for the recleansing department. Married to Fresno native Isabel Birmingham in 1910, he was widely regarded for his technical skill and active involvement in fraternal organizations like the Native Sons of the Golden West.
