Hart, Hon. Charles A.
Born in Geneva, New York, in 1820, Judge Charles A. Hart studied law and worked as a civil engineer and commission merchant before making an arduous overland trek across Mexico and the desert southwest to California in 1849. After several successful years in placer mining, he settled around 1853 in Millerton, where he opened a law practice and quickly established himself as a respected legal authority among both English- and Spanish-speaking residents. When Fresno County was formed in 1856, Hart was appointed its very first County Judge, serving a term before returning to his law practice and eventually purchasing the historic Fort Miller post buildings for his ranch home.
In 1865, Judge Hart married Mrs. Ann (Brennan) McKenzie, with whom he raised his son, Truman G. Hart, alongside his stepchildren. Retiring from the law in 1874 due to ill health, he transitioned to managing a 2,000-acre estate at Fort Miller, earning recognition as a pioneer fruit grower and stock-raiser in the San Joaquin Valley. Passing away in 1903, Hart left behind an enduring legacy as one of Fresno County’s most influential, high-minded foundational figures.
