Hart, Charles Franklin
Born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1853, Charles F. Hart grew up in Missouri and worked for sixteen years with the Chicago & Alton Railroad, progressing from wood-saw foreman to freight and passenger conductor. Inspired by his wife, California native Davidella Daniel, whom he married in 1878, Hart moved to Fresno in 1886. Although early farming setbacks and dry seasons forced him to temporarily work as a cattle ranch superintendent and vineyard manager, he persevered and built a highly successful agricultural career in Fresno County.
Hart ultimately established a ten-acre home property near Rolinda on Braly and Church Avenues, along with a forty-acre peach, berry, and vegetable farm on Blackstone Avenue. Together with his wife, he raised one daughter, Pearl, who served as a deputy in the county assessor’s office. An active Democrat, Odd Fellow, and advocate for local infrastructure, Hart dedicated twelve years to running the local road grader, securing a respected place as a hardworking pioneer of Fresno County.
