Hardwicke, C. S.
Born in Rotherham, Yorkshire, England, in 1869, C. S. Hardwicke immigrated to Fresno County in 1886 at the age of seventeen, initially settling in the Washington Colony. Although early economic panics cost him his initial land holdings, he persevered, moving temporarily to Orosi in Tulare County to develop another vineyard. Returning to Fresno County in 1906, he established a highly productive forty-acre estate on Jensen Avenue, specializing in table grapes—most notably bearing and young Emperors—alongside Cornichons, Sultanas, Thompson Seedless, Muscats, and Navel oranges.
While in Tulare County, Hardwicke married Wildflower pioneer descendant Margaret Forseman, with whom he had two children, Constance and Kenneth, before her passing in 1913. Renowned for his progressive methods and commitment to local development, Hardwicke served for many years as a school trustee for the Fresno Colony district, invested as a stockholder in the California Associated Raisin Company, and earned a high reputation as an energetic, public-spirited pioneer of Fresno County.
