Hanson, Olof
Born in Soderham, Sweden, in 1859, Olof Hanson immigrated to the United States with his parents, John and Kare Hanson, and seven siblings in 1881. After farming in Kansas for nine years, he traveled to California with two brothers in 1890 and elected to settle permanently in Fresno County. In the spring of 1891, Hanson acquired an eighty-acre tract in the Wahtoke district, which was then untamed hog-wallow and grain fields.
Through intelligent and systematic labor, Hanson transformed the wilderness into a thriving, highly productive fruit and raisin ranch, specializing in figs, prunes, and peaches alongside Thompson Seedless, Muscat, and Sultana grapes. A steadfast proponent of cooperative agriculture, Hanson actively supported the region’s economic growth as a member of both the California Associated Raisin Company and the California Peach Growers, Inc., earning wide respect as a key contributor to the county’s agricultural development.
