Hanson, Nels
Born in Lund, Sweden, in 1858, Nels Hanson worked in a woolen mill as a child and later trained as a tanner before immigrating to the United States in 1880. After working in Chicago, rail construction in Iowa, and mining in Michigan—where he became a successful independent contractor—he invested his savings in 80 acres near Kingsburg, California, arriving there permanently in 1888. Following a trip back to Sweden, he married his fiancée of ten years, Cecelia Hanson, in Kingsburg later that same year.
Hanson overcame early economic setbacks to build extensive agricultural holdings, including a prime property within the Kingsburg city limits, a 20-acre Zinfandel vineyard, a 20-acre Thompson Seedless vineyard, and a 40-acre Muscat vineyard. He and his wife raised four children: Frank (a decorated World War I veteran), Alfred, Victor, and Henry. A respected Mason and community builder, Hanson earned wide affection in Kingsburg for his enterprise, generosity, and public service.
