Hansen, Thomas
Born in Jylland, Denmark, in 1847, Thomas Hansen gained extensive agricultural and forestry experience in his native land before immigrating to the United States in 1878. Arriving in California in 1879, he moved to Fresno County to serve as superintendent of Hedge Row Vineyard—the first vineyard in the county to produce Muscat grapes and the first managed on a commercial scale. Hansen, proprietor of Selma’s “The Toggery.” A devoted civic and religious leader, Hansen served seven years on the Monmouth School Board and played a foundational role in establishing Danish Lutheranism in California, helping organize the state’s first Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church at Easton and aiding in the construction of eleven other churches. retiring to Los Angeles in 1918, he left behind a distinguished legacy as a pioneer horticulturist, viticulturist, and community builder.
