Hansen, Jorgen
Born in Fyen, Denmark, in 1853, Jorgen Hansen trained as a miller before immigrating to the United States in 1872. After working in agriculture and lumber in Illinois and Michigan, he traveled to San Francisco in 1876 and relocated to Fresno County two years later as an early pioneer of the Washington Colony. Throughout his farming career, he developed several properties across the region—including a twenty-five-year residence in Central Colony—before establishing his final twenty-acre estate in the Madison district, three miles west of Fresno, featuring peach orchards alongside Thompson Seedless, Muscat, and Feherzagos grapevines.
Hansen married Mrs. Jorgina (Jorgensen) Rasmussen, raising a blended family of eight children: Herman, Annie, Meta, William, Louis, Emma, Lillian, Elsie, and Harry. A prominent figure in local civic and agricultural developments, Hansen served as an early director and original stockholder of the Danish Creamery Association, twice held office as a school trustee in Central Colony, and actively supported both the California Associated Raisin Company and the California Peach Growers, Inc.
