Hansen, Jes
Born in Slesvig, Denmark, in 1853, Jes Hansen immigrated to the United States in 1875 to escape Prussian military oppression, traveling via Panama to San Francisco. After spending several years salmon fishing on the Sacramento River and working on grain ranches, he became an early settler of Fresno County’s Washington Colony in 1879. He subsequently homesteaded 160 acres near Huron and spent a decade grain farming in San Luis Obispo County before returning to Fresno County in 1904, where he transformed forty acres of raw land on Pierce Avenue into a flourishing ranch of peaches, vines, and alfalfa.
In 1883, Hansen married Danish native Mary Mortensen, with whom he raised six children, including two sons who served with the United States Army in France during World War I. Deeply committed to community enhancement, Hansen served as a trustee for the McKinley school district, overseeing the construction of a new schoolhouse and personally planting the shade trees that beautified the grounds. A devout Lutheran and steadfast Republican, Hansen actively championed local agricultural prosperity through his participation in both the California Associated Raisin Company and the California Peach Growers, Inc.
