Hansen, James
Born in Odense, Denmark, in 1869, James Hansen immigrated to the United States in 1888, working for several years in Nebraska as a bronco buster and farmer before relocating to Fresno County in 1907. After initial ventures in viticulture in Malaga, dairying, and operating the Danish Land Office real estate firm in Fresno, Hansen settled near Kerman in 1913. There, he undertook the arduous task of clearing a thick willow patch to develop a highly productive thirty-five-acre ranch in the Dakota Colony, planting alfalfa alongside Emperor, Sultana, and Thompson Seedless grapevines.
In Nebraska, Hansen married Danish native Hansine Ohlrick, with whom he had three children: Annie, Maria, and Charles—a U.S. Army veteran of the Twenty-First Infantry who returned home to assist on the family ranch. Revered for his determination and farming expertise, Hansen transformed previously unusable land into a flourishing agricultural property, embodying the progressive pioneer spirit of Fresno County.
