Hansen, J. P.
Born in Fyen, Denmark, in 1868, J. P. Hansen immigrated to Fresno County in 1880 at just twelve years of age. A self-educated youth, he worked on local vineyards before partnering with his brother, H. J. Hansen, in 1895 to lease and cultivate a large grain farm near Academy for five years. After working for Fresno County running road-grading equipment, Hansen purchased a forty-acre tract half a mile west of Melvin, which he painstakingly cleared and developed into a highly productive vineyard featuring Malaga, wine, and Thompson Seedless grapes.
In 1904, Hansen married Danish native Anna Kirsten Anderson, with whom he had two children, Iver and Marie. A Past Grand of the Clovis Lodge of the Odd Fellows and a member of the Fresno Dania, Hansen maintained a high standard of community involvement while actively supporting local agricultural unity as a dedicated member of the California Associated Raisin Company.
