Hansen, Hans C.
Born on the Danish island of Bornholm in 1862, H. C. Hansen trained as a shoemaker before immigrating to California at age twenty-one. After working on grain ranches in Merced and Fresno counties, he embarked on independent farming, operating heavy grading machinery and leasing land. Despite losing his early savings to alkali soil on his first vineyard, Hansen persevered, successfully renting land until he acquired a prosperous twenty-acre Muscat vineyard on Kearney Avenue, which he operated for nearly two decades before establishing his current vineyard on Belmont Avenue and an alfalfa ranch on California Avenue.
In Fresno, Hansen married Iowa native Stella Welch, with whom he had three children: Clara, Mabel, and Frank—who served seventeen months overseas in France during World War I with the Rainbow Division. A steadfast advocate for agricultural organization, Hansen maintained active membership in the California Associated Raisin Company and every regional raisin cooperative from their inception. Beyond his farming pursuits, he served six years as a school trustee in the Madison district and was an active member of both the Odd Fellows and Woodmen of the World.
