Hansen, H. J.
Born in Denmark in 1870, H. J. Hansen immigrated to Fresno County at age fourteen, initially assisting his father, Iver Hansen, before embarking on independent agricultural pursuits. In 1895, he partnered with his brother, J. P. Hansen, to lease and cultivate an 800-acre grain farm near Academy for five years. Dissolving the partnership in 1900, Hansen purchased twenty acres of unimproved land in Wolters Colony, transforming it into a highly developed ranch featuring four acres of peach orchards alongside wine, Muscat, and Sultana grape vineyards.
In Fresno, Hansen married Danish native Lowena Anderson, with whom he raised six children: Laura, Elsie, Louis, Walter, Martin, and Carl. A staunch advocate for quality education, he served six years as a trustee for the Wolters school district, playing a central role in constructing a modern, Mission-style schoolhouse. Alongside his civic efforts, Hansen maintained long-standing support for local growers’ cooperatives, including the California Associated Raisin Company and the California Peach Growers, Inc.
