Hansen, Fred W.
Fred W. Hansen, born on his family’s Central Colony homestead in 1876, inherited a strong tradition of agricultural enterprise from his Danish pioneer parents. Early in his career, he established a reputation for cultivating exceptional raisin vineyards while simultaneously launching the Danish Creamery—the first successful cooperative creamery in Fresno County. Facing early industry hardships from rising water tables and erratic market prices, Hansen became an ardent advocate for agricultural organization, recognizing that collective unity was vital for long-term farm stability.
His tireless efforts culminated in his role as a principal promoter, president, and manager of the San Joaquin Valley Milk Producers’ Association, a major cooperative network spanning the region. Alongside his business leadership, Hansen actively served as an Orange Center school trustee and supported the Elm Avenue Danish Lutheran Church. Together with his wife, Dorothea Gortz, whom he married in 1896, and their eight children—including three sons who served during World War I—Hansen remained a revered pillar of progressive leadership and liberal hospitality throughout Fresno County.
