Hansen, E. M.
Born in Denmark in 1854, E. M. Hansen immigrated to the United States in 1874 to escape military oppression, learning the butcher’s trade in New Jersey before moving to California in 1881. After working as a horse-car driver in San Francisco, he relocated to Fresno County, where he established a successful retail meat business and ran delivery wagons throughout the region. He eventually transitioned to agriculture, purchasing forty acres of raw land on Jensen Avenue in 1891, which he successfully leveled and improved for viticulture and, later, a highly productive dairy operation.
Alongside his wife, Christene Madsen, with whom he raised three children, Hansen became an active leader in the local Danish community, serving as president of the Danish Brotherhood of Fresno. He embraced progressive agricultural movements, acquiring stock in both the Danish Creamery Association and the California Associated Raisin Company. Highly respected for his industry and civic pride, Hansen developed his ranch into a valuable, modern estate, solidifying his reputation as a prosperous and loyal pioneer of Fresno County.
