Hansen, Chris L.
Chris L. Hansen, born under the Danish flag in Schleswig-Holstein in 1859, fled German militarism as a youth to live in Denmark, where he served in the Danish army before immigrating to the United States in 1882. After brief, low-wage struggles in New Jersey, he arrived in Fresno County in 1883 and quickly secured a position with the Prescott & Pierce Lumber and Wood Yard. Recognizing his sharp clerical skills, the firm promoted him to yard foreman in 1884—a position he held with outstanding fidelity for thirty-four years through the company’s incorporation into the Valley Lumber Company.
While earning a steady wage, Hansen wisely invested in Fresno real estate and expanding agricultural properties, eventually acquiring a 300-acre tract near Helm station and a 240-acre West Side ranch. In 1918, he resigned from the lumber company to manage his land full-time, pioneering an ambitious project by planting thousands of French prune trees. Along with his wife, Jutland native Ingeborg Madsen, and their eight surviving children, Hansen balanced his successful agricultural enterprises with a dedicated commitment to local civic improvement and the religious work of the Salvation Army.

Hansen, Chris L.
Born in Denmark in 1885, Chris L. Hansen gained early experience on his father’s prosperous dairy farm before immigrating to the United States in 1906. After working briefly in Iowa, he was drawn to California in 1907, initially settling in Newman to lease and operate a dairy. Recognizing the superior agricultural opportunities of Fresno County, Hansen relocated to Tranquillity in 1912 and purchased forty acres of raw land.
He aggressively improved his property by leveling the ground, planting alfalfa, and building a highly successful dairy and poultry operation. Alongside his wife, Egidia Hansen, who emigrated from his native Danish locality, he raised their son, Marius, and actively supported the local Lutheran Church. Renowned for his scientific farming methods, Hansen expanded his local grain cultivation and served as an active member of the San Joaquin Valley Milk Producers Association.
