Hancock, Henry M.
Henry M. Hancock, born in Iowa in 1852 and a direct descendant of patriot John Hancock, farmed in his native state and Kansas before relocating to Riverdale, California, in 1904. He quickly established himself as a prominent local landowner, developing a highly productive 240-acre home ranch and acquiring an additional 570 acres near Tranquillity. Recognizing the vital need for modern infrastructure, he generously donated railway right-of-way and successfully petitioned for a rail line connection to service the local agricultural industry.
As a principal founder and the long-serving president of the Riverdale Cooperative Creamery, Hancock oversaw the development of a state-of-the-art, seventy-five-thousand-dollar processing plant. Despite facing profound personal tragedies with the loss of several of their seven children, he and his wife, Rebecca Fickel, maintained a resilient, public-spirited commitment to their community. Through his progressive corporate leadership and active support of local schools, Hancock earned widespread gratitude as a pillar of civic and commercial growth.
