Hagopean, Albert
Albert Hagopean, born in Smyrna in 1859 to an educated Armenian missionary family, mastered the watchmaking trade before immigrating to the United States in 1881, where he immediately filed for citizenship. He worked for decades as an expert watchmaker in New York and at the famous watch factory in Elgin, Illinois, while also serving five years in the Illinois State Militia. During the Spanish-American War, he volunteered for the regular United States Army, utilizing his fluency in French to serve as an interpreter and acting quartermaster in Puerto Rico before receiving an honorable discharge in 1899.
Driven by a long-standing desire to settle in California, Hagopean permanently relocated to Fresno County in 1910, establishing a twenty-five-acre ranch southeast of Parlier. He applied a highly scientific mindset to his horticultural pursuits, systematically upgrading his initial vineyards by grafting Zinfandel grapes onto robust Thompson Seedless and Malaga varieties. Sharing a comfortable modern bungalow with his wife, Blanche Mann, Hagopean became an active member of the Spanish War Veterans and a dedicated supporter of the California Associated Raisin Company, cementing his legacy as a patriotic and progressive pioneer.
