Hagen, William C.
William C. Hagen, born in Prussia in 1852, immigrated to the United States at age sixteen and worked as a railroad brakeman in Chicago before moving west to Oregon and eventually settling in Fresno County in 1884. Starting his local agricultural career as a monthly farm laborer with only sixty dollars to his name, he slowly accumulated enough capital to lease land in the Oleander district. By 1898, he purchased an unimproved fifteen-acre tract northeast of Fowler, which he aggressively expanded through subsequent land acquisitions into a highly successful, fifty-five-acre fruit orchard and vineyard.
When his sons enlisted to defend their country during the World War, Hagen contracted his extensive operations back to his original fifteen-acre home property at Washington Avenue and Giffen Road. This patriotic sacrifice mirrored a deep family dedication to the war effort; his sons Ernest and Chester served in the marines and artillery, while his daughter Martha volunteered as a trained nurse at Letterman Hospital. An independent voter, long-standing member of the Independent Order of Foresters, and an active supporter of the regional raisin and peach growers’ cooperatives, Hagen earned widespread respect as a public-spirited pioneer who triumphantly built his fortune from the ground up.
