Gust, Peter
Peter Gust, born in Schleswig-Holstein in 1871, spent his youth working for meager wages on German farms before immigrating to the United States in 1901 to join his brother in Fresno. By 1903, he purchased an eighty-acre tract of pastureland near Parlier on credit, subsequently selling off a portion to finance the comprehensive development of his remaining property. Through disciplined labor, he systematically installed modern irrigation machinery, constructed advanced cement pipelines, and transformed the raw acreage into a highly productive vineyard and orchard.
Dedicated to his family and his adopted country, Gust built a comfortable home for his wife, Mary Winters, and their two children, John and Frieda. As an exceptionally capable manager, he successfully cultivated specialized tracts of Muscat and Thompson Seedless grapes alongside thriving peach and apricot groves. Widely recognized as a loyal German-American citizen, Gust earned the deep respect of his neighbors by exemplifying the power of perseverance and industrious civic leadership within Fresno County.
