Gunn, John and Emma L.
Gunn, John and Emma L.
John Gunn, born in London in 1854, mastered the planing mill business in England and New York before migrating to Fresno County in 1889. Transitioning from industry to agriculture, he joined the Enterprise Colony east of Clovis and systematically transformed a raw forty-five-acre stubble field into a flourishing vineyard and orchard. Through decades of skilled development, he expanded his holdings, notably establishing a premier 100-acre vineyard at Clotho complete with a custom, railroad-connected packing house.
In 1918, the family made agricultural history by selling the Clotho property for a record-breaking $100,000, establishing the highest vineyard transaction price in the county at that time. Alongside his wife, Emma Louisa Henderson, Gunn reinvested in his community by championing regional fruit-marketing cooperatives from their inception as an active stockholder in the California Associated Raisin Company. A proud member of the Woodmen of the World, Gunn achieved remarkable commercial success while remaining deeply devoted to the progressive advancement of his adopted home.
