Guler, Stephen
Stephen Guler, born in Switzerland in 1877, emigrated to North Dakota with his family in 1884, where he spent his youth mastering large-scale grain farming and stock raising. After establishing his own successful 320-acre ranch near New Rockford, a 1909 exploratory trip to the Pacific Coast inspired him to permanently relocate his operations to California. Settling in Fresno County’s Barstow Colony, he systematically developed a model forty-acre estate featuring a dedicated dairy, robust alfalfa fields, and high-yielding vineyards of Thompson Seedless grapes, peaches, and apricots.
Supported by an advanced irrigation pumping plant and modern tractor machinery, Guler’s scientifically managed orchard became a celebrated showplace of agricultural efficiency. Alongside his wife, North Dakota native Anna Christ, and their three children, he immersed himself deeply in the civic, social, and cooperative life of his adopted community. A committed Socialist voter and enthusiastic school trustee, Guler also championed the regional fruit industry as an active district representative for both the California Associated Raisin Company and the California Peach Growers, Inc.
