Greve, Herman H.
Herman H. Greve, born in Monterey County in 1886, learned the cattle-ranching trade on his parents’ pioneer homestead before co-founding the “Greve Brothers” livestock partnership. In 1907, he established an independent homestead on Salt Creek in Warthan Canyon, branding his herd with his personal “H.X.” combined mark. By 1910, he permanently relocated to Fresno County, expanding his holdings into a well-improved 520-acre ranching property while also leasing additional rangeland to raise grain.
Beyond his agricultural pursuits, Greve served for several years as the regional overseer of roads, meticulously maintaining a rugged twenty-mile public thoroughfare from Alcalde to the Monterey County line. In 1907, he married Michigan native Ella M. Grant, whose sister Clara married Herman’s brother Martin, tightly weaving the two pioneer families together. A staunch Republican and progressive community builder, Greve raised a son named Dale Herman and remained a highly respected figure throughout the Coast Range foothills.
