Gregory, James G.
J. G. Gregory, born in Oregon in 1873, moved to California with his parents in 1881 and eventually became an authority on regional orchards and vineyards through decades of dedicated ranching. As a highly successful real estate developer, he transformed vast tracts of grain and sheep-grazing land into premium fruit ranches, yielding immense seasonal profits before systematically selling them to acquire newer properties. By 1919, his extensive agricultural portfolio expanded to include a flourishing 280-acre fruit estate in the Vinland Colony river bottom alongside a substantial 480-acre grain property located near Orland.
In 1897, Gregory married California native Metta C. Patterson, and together they raised four sons while actively participating in the spiritual and civic life of their community. A progressive leader in the region’s agricultural network, he served as a deacon in the Christian Church and held influential stock in both the California Associated Raisin Company and the California Peach Growers, Inc. Ultimately, Gregory remains highly esteemed across Fresno County as an innovative, self-made horticulturist whose unwavering faith in the San Joaquin Valley significantly advanced the local fruit industry.
