Graham, Joseph Martin
Joseph Martin Graham, born in Ireland in 1861 and raised in New York, moved to Solano County, California, around 1875, where he entered the dairy business alongside his parents. After marrying San Francisco academy graduate Nellie Agnes Drum in 1888, the couple established the highly successful “Graham Ranch” near Cordelia. Operating an expansive 640-acre estate with four separate dairies, Graham became a major regional producer, famously manufacturing the “G. Butter” brand and shipping massive daily quantities of milk to San Francisco.
Following the tragic loss of their oldest son, Graham expanded his interests to Fresno County, purchasing an 80-acre vineyard and eventually relocating his elite dairy herd there in 1909. In 1912, he purchased a 160-acre ranch on Belmont Avenue, where he ran a model agricultural operation until his death on August 11, 1916. Celebrated as a public-spirited Republican, a member of the Knights of Pythias, and a dedicated trustee of the Houghton school district, he left behind a highly respected civic and commercial legacy.
