Good, James Henry
James Henry Good, born in West Virginia in 1873, relocated to Nebraska as a teenager before migrating to Fresno County, California, in October 1894. After gaining foundational experience as a vineyard worker and leasing a 640-acre grain ranch, he systematically acquired raw land following his 1898 marriage to Indiana native Rachael Kuhn. Through intensive cultivation, Good progressively expanded his holdings into a highly productive 100-acre estate split between a prosperous fruit orchard, alfalfa fields, and a variety of premium raisin grape vineyards.
A progressive agriculturalist, Good became a foundational stockholder in the Clovis Farmers’ Union and an active member of both the California Associated Raisin Company and the California Peach Growers, Inc. He dedicated much of his time to community service, acting as a trustee and clerk for the Jefferson School District and holding various leadership and teaching roles within the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Residing in a commodious modern home built in 1904, he successfully raised two children while remaining a widely respected advocate for regional development and settlement.
