Goehring, John G.
John G. Goehring, born in Germany in 1876, immigrated to the United States alone at age sixteen and spent five years in Missouri before joining the Alaska gold rush. Following his mining venture, he enlisted in the United States Volunteers and served honorably for nearly two years in the Philippine Islands during the Spanish-American War era. He then migrated to California, eventually settling in Fresno in 1902 where he transitioned from fruit packing into a distinguished career in law enforcement.
Beginning as a patrolman in 1906, Goehring rose through the ranks to detective captain and was ultimately appointed Fresno’s Chief of Police in 1915. He introduced modern filing systems and significantly boosted departmental efficiency, earning high praise as the city’s finest police chief before resigning in 1919 to enter private business. A dedicated Lutheran and family man, he shared his life with his wife, Freda Eisele, and their daughter, Margaret Anna, while remaining highly active in fraternal circles.
